Cisco 3550 deleted flash

I have a 3550 switch - trying to update the flash to a newer version - I have downloaded the flash and have it on my PC which is a tftp server.  Like a not so smart person I typed erase flash - now I am not sure how to get the new image on the switch  as I am "new  and different mode" on the switch I have never been in.  Please help me correct my stupidity :)

You should be in rommon mode:

Here is a good expalnation from a prior EE post:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Routers/Q_21112022.html

rommon 1> IP_ADDRESS=172.15.19.11
rommon 2> IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
rommon 3> DEFAULT_GATEWAY=172.16.19.1
rommon 4> TFTP_SERVER=172.15.20.10
rommon 5> TFTP_FILE=c3620-i-mz.120-4.T

Once you set the above variables, you can type the tftpdnld command and press "y" to proceed:

rommon 6>tftpdnld
Do you wish to continue? y/n: y

Make sure you have your TFTP server running and the IOS image in the root of the TFTP server's folder.

Reload the switch and it should come up with the new IOS.

Perhaps you just lost your config, can you post a "show version",

also, a "dir flash:", do you have a copy of your config? You may be able to renter the config. You should see the IOS image
file in the flash directory if it is still there.

when i did switchr: dir flash there was nothing - just an info file and one other file that i don't remember the name of...but not the image - suffice it to say i pretty much blew it away - it took about an hour and a half but via xmodem thru hyperterm i loaded the new CAT OS image i wanted on there - the switch is now up and running again - i am not sure if i really had any other choice - if the docs i read were right, i wiped the switch out to a point that i couldn't get to rommon and use tftp

yep - now i know not to type in erase flash again

could you possibly point me to an article or a previous question with the proper way to change the flash image on a switch or router when there is already an existing image in use?

I have done this many times before:

1) Check the size of the image in use, the size of the image you would like to use, and how much available flash you have
2) download new version to a tftp server
3) transfer new image from tftp server to flash  ( copy tftp flash:)
4) change boot system command to reflect new image, if catos then it will boot the first image in flash
or you can use the "set boot system flash:image_name" command
5) I would keep at least one older version of catos untill you verify the new image is ok
6) You can delete older images via the delete command
7) You will also need to squeeze the filesystem when done to free up the deleted space
