How to Restore or Rebuild a Password File?

Greetings All,

I currently have a FreeBSD 4.8 box and I am building a new (bigger, better) 4.10 box. I am moving all of the 'Home' directories over to the new box and I want to preserve the old password file. I know that I can't just copy the old one to the new machine but I seem to remember that there is a way to preserve or convert the password file.

I just don't remember where I sawt that info.....

Thanks for any help

    Accepted Solution

Just copy the /etc/master.passwd file over to the new box, and then run: pwd_mkdb
    to rebuild the database.

    Hi it_alchemist,

I was just about to delete this question because I had found information stating the same. However I am glad that I received a response that confirmed the process. I had already moved over the 'Home' directories but was reluctant to do much else until I had a 'warm fuzzy' about the logins.

I am going to try that and hope for the best. I'll let you know how things go.
