It looks like a media error - have you tried a different brand of discs?  Which burner are you using?  DVDRW IDE1004 has DMA off, which is not desirable - change it in the BIOS and in device manager.  Some DVD drives like being master, and not slave.  What version of Nero are you using?

I am using Sony DVD-R, I am using the DVDRW IDE1004. I have the latest version of nero.

I have used may different burning applications Roxio,DVDwizardpro, DVD copy. All of them give me errors during  the burning process

Sounds like your drive doesn't like the media/firmware is corrupted.   Also, check and see if your drive is setup as master on the secondary channel and that the jumper is set right (and it's plugged into the proper connector on the cable).

If you've installed multiple burning programs, check for the presence of "upper and lower filters" in the registry: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060

Try removing ALL burning software.

Find and download Windows XP registery cleaner:  https://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/

Reapply SP2
Install NERO 6, patch it and then run Window's Update.

Here is firmware for your drive, please read the instuctions before flashing.  Yours is located about halfway down the screen:

http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/FirmwareDownload.html

Before you do the above, enter BIOS and check to see that DMA is check or turned on for the DVD R R/W.  You can also check in the Device Manager.

Check jumpers on the back of the drives to make sure one is Master and the other is Slave (Secondary) if they are on the same ribbon cable.  The end of the cable is for the Master.
