cannot get CR11 connected to oracle when using VB6..

ive got a complicated report to run and the SQL is so long, and hard that i have to use an ADO connection to the database and select the results into a temporary table.

I have designed a CR11 report in the Crystal Reports designer and now come to join the two together; In the VB6 IDE i added a new CR11 designer and said "get from an existing report"

now, no matter what i do, though the report looks fine on the designer (layout wise, not preview wise) i cannot get it to log on to my oracle database properly. It fails with a variety of reasons (1005, 1017, 1007 oracle error codes) depending on what i do, and ive tried everything i can find:

Report.Database.LogonServer ...
Report.Database.Tables(i).ConnectionProperties.DeleteAll ... Add...

I just cannot get any connection properties to work correctly with this report. Has anyone got some code snippets or maybe even an entire small test exe that uses VB6 code to show a CR11 report? It's driving me crazy...

Even if i start a new, blank exe project, add a new, blank designer.. Go into the database expert, make a new conenction to the oracle server, put the username and password into the wizard, select a table, drop fields onto the table from the report, and then press Play to start the EXE, i get a Logon Failed error message.. I cant justify my manager spending 500 quid on this! Am i missing something really simple?

    i solved it another way:

      Dim adoRS As ADODB.Recordset
      ps.prepareStatement "SELECT * FROM temptable"
      Set adoRS = ps.executeQuery
      Form2.Report.Database.SetDataSource adoRS, 3, 1

the ps is just a helper class for ADO. any code that returns an ADODB.RecordSet would work with this
