Windows Shell - explorer.exe will not launch - Domain controller

I installed SP4 for 2000, and now after login I just get a blank screen with no start menu or anything. I can run the task manager, log-out and all the normal stuff. i uninstalled SP4 through the appwiz command, but no changes.

If i try to manually load explorer.exe it does nothing

I can get into the management console and check logs and everything, but nothing indicates a problem.

I wonder if system file checker will hurt or fix this issue.

I am going to try re-installing SP4 one more time to see if it might fix itself, then if that doesnt work i will run sfc.

Hi totalimpact,

try logging in with different user.
extracting explorer.exe from win2k cd
or a system restore!

Cheers!

did all that, system restore is not an option in 2000.

Still not working.

Should i run System File Checker, or would this be dangerous.

Currently the system is running Windows 2000 server SP3 after uninstalling SP4.
