socket A motherboard

I have a uwave MB that came out of a compaq computer.  It has a bad processor in it, so I'm trying to find another one for it.  The problem is - I Can't find one -  The processor is a Socket A, Amd Athlon thunderbird, a0900amt3b.  I have found other socket A Thunderbirds, but not 900 mhz.  Example i found a 1.8 ghz socket A.  Have also found 1000, 1100, ... Can I use any of these for my MB.  I'm sure I can't use just any socket A processor can I?

Thanks!

Here are some, however you will not be able to use XP series processors, only 200 or 266mHz FSB.

First things first. Have you checked with Compaq's website? It may list the CPUs that your motherboard is compatible with and may also provide you with BIOS updates that can enable you to use higher-speed processors.

Sethag,

We need to know the model of the Compaq it was pulled from.  Once you know, you can go to the Compaq site and find the user manual for your model in the support section and it will list the processors that the motherboard supports.  As Kwapaw says, a BIOS update will usually allow it to use more faster processors which are of the same socket type (Socket A).  Check the BIOS update readme to find specifically which speeds the update will allow you support.

The catch there is that you would first need to put in a lower speed CPU first in order to get the board running to do the flash update. Once the BIOS is flashed, you can remove the CPU and add on the faster one that update made possible.

Yes, if it will work on my pc, I am interested in your chip.  What do I need to do?

Thanks,

Actually, I think this would work even better since you need a socket 642 processor.

biljax,

But that was a 1 gig processor.  I thought I needed a 900 or smaller so that I could update my bios first.

it just won't recognize the last 100 MHZ

The only real issue is whether your motherboard supports a 266 front side bus; it most likely does not.  If it only supports a 200, or if you just want to stick with a safe bet, then buy one of these on eBay.

The best price I've found from online stores is $148 because this CPU is now rare.  Furthermore, the online stores are unreliable according to resellerratings.com.

Regarding your concerns about flashing the BIOS, if your motherboard can't recognize a 1.4GHz Thunderbird then it will simply POST at a slower speed.  So you will still be able to flash your BIOS.

I hope this helps,

Just my feeling, but I believe that my answer, if followed, would have led sethag to a solid resolution of his problem.

Sorry for the delay.  But I have been unable to order a processor untill tonight.  I have one on the way to me now.  I wanted to keep this open untill I was able to get the processor in.  If I need to close it I will.

OK.  Again, sorry for the delay.  The processor is in and the system is now working.
