hard drive locked can it be unlocked via

i bought 3 xbox hard drives 8 gigs from a friend who replaces and mods xbox's with linux on them, but i want to use the drives in regular pc systems for routers im building with astaro.com...
i know that theres a locking and unlocking mechanism but what im unsure of is whether or not you need the exact same xbox to do this? or can i just use any modded xbox to perform the unlock on the drive?

do i need to then format or wipe the drive?

Heres a quote from that page.

The Lock codes

The OEM bios generates the unlock key “on the fly”. That is it generates a unique key or password which is dependant upon several things.

This password is generated by looking at your Xbox’s unique serial number, configuration, revision level and the information obtained from the currently installed hard drive itself.

******************************************
This in turn means that you cannot simply use a password from another drive or Xbox when locking a new drive. Instead you must figure out what the Xbox is going to use as an unlock password for your new replacement drive.Fortunately the Evolution-X hackers gave us a wonderful tool to do this very thing.
******************************************

This “tool” is built into the Evolution-X dashboards “backup” command. The “backup” command figures out what password the Xbox will use to unlock the currently installed drive. It places the password/key into the C:\Backup directory in a file called hddinfo.txt.

This is why Evolution-X must be installed and running on the Xbox and drive that you intend to lock first.

What do I need?

Before proceeding be aware that you will need the following.

*******************************************
* A working modified Xbox with a replacement hard drive ALREADY installed.
Eh, skip the last part about the EvoX tool, I didn't mean to grab that crap.

ok i managed to unlock my old 8 gig drive in my xbox but like you said not the others ...bummer

is there a chance some program on the net could brute force these other drives or would this take years/months or how long?
Well, not really.  After I think 3 tries at the password, the drive locks itself against password retries until the next power cycle.  So a brute force pw proggy would not really be effictive as after every 3 tries you'll have to power off then on.

Believe me, I've tried everything I could think of to get into a locked drive by myself, and I don't think it's possible without some kind of extra hardware.  Software alone cannot do it.
