Last Ditch Effor to Save XP Before Reload

Working on a clients XP Computer - had w32.crog worm - removed hard drived and scanned in another computer to remove virus.  Now it starts up but I have no icons - owner is the account.  So I started in safe mode and logged in under administrator - still no icons.  The only thing that works is the task manager.  So i found a way to control panel and tried to add a new user but that part won't come up.  In fact I don't show any users under administrative tools.  I then went to services and got an initialization error - "(DacCom) is not installed properly." - should I just trash it or do you have any ideas.  I was able to load and run adaware and removed 600 pieces of spyware.

I even ran SFC /Scannow with no help.  I tried a repair but it said it couldn't find some files - like winlogon.exe and others.

Yes, a clean install is probably the best, but you can just do a re-install w/o formatting first because that might fix it wothout having to restore all user files.

Have you tired doing last known good config at the post, its ok to do this too once any infections have been removed

recovery maybe better, however try this fix system 32 first, and at the c windows prompt  type in chkdsk /r  press enter let it run
also chkdsk /p press enter to run it
once they are done running take out the xpcd and type in exit and press enter see if windows will start up now.

Try some utilities from the recovery console

1. boot to the recovery console (Boot to the XP cd, and choose the initial repair option)
2. at the  C:\ prompt, type in  fixboot and hit enter
3. type fixmbr and hit enter
4. type chkdsk /r and hit enter

The repair utility will run a check disk on the hard drive and repair any error that it finds. If it still does not work, move on to the next utility. ** If you cannot boot to the recovery console, try to boot to Safe Mode with command prompt, and run the same utilities.

Repair Utility (Repair on the Operating System)

1. Boot to the Windows installation CD
2. The Windows CD Setup will begin and Setup is loading files
3. It will get the Welcome to Setup Screen
4. Press ENTER to run setup for Windows
5. Press F8 to accept the licensing agreement
6. Press R to repair the select Windows installation

This one reinstalls standard Windows files, but leaves your profile and programs intact.

**You can also try to run System Rstore form safe mode, but this is not typically a good idea when dealing with virus issues.**

I Just recently found that you can access the System Restore Panel by pressing the Windows Key + R and typing “msconfig” without the quotation marks. Then click the button at the bottom that says “Launch System Restore”. If this works make sure to restore to a time before the worm infected the machine.
