Last Ditch Effor to Save XP Before Reload

Working on a clients XP Computer - had w32.crog worm - removed hard drived and scanned in another computer to remove virus.  Now it starts up but I have no icons - owner is the account.  So I started in safe mode and logged in under administrator - still no icons.  The only thing that works is the task manager.  So i found a way to control panel and tried to add a new user but that part won't come up.  In fact I don't show any users under administrative tools.  I then went to services and got an initialization error - "(DacCom) is not installed properly." - should I just trash it or do you have any ideas.  I was able to load and run adaware and removed 600 pieces of spyware.

I even ran SFC /Scannow with no help.  I tried a repair but it said it couldn't find some files - like winlogon.exe and others.
Yes, a clean install is probably the best, but you can just do a re-install w/o formatting first because that might fix it wothout having to restore all user files.

Have you tired doing last known good config at the post, its ok to do this too once any infections have been removed

recovery maybe better, however try this fix system 32 first, and at the c windows prompt  type in chkdsk /r  press enter let it run
also chkdsk /p press enter to run it
once they are done running take out the xpcd and type in exit and press enter see if windows will start up now.

I Just recently found that you can access the System Restore Panel by pressing the Windows Key + R and typing “msconfig” without the quotation marks. Then click the button at the bottom that says “Launch System Restore”. If this works make sure to restore to a time before the worm infected the machine.
