user is trying to log into the computer running windows 2000 and is getting an error stating files that are required for windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions to maintain sys stability must restore orig. version of files please insert win 2000 cd, after inserting disk, device comes up to a desktop with no icons, what is this and how can i fix it?

is this just one user on a particlar machine? can other users log into that machine?
what files is it saying are missing?

You best bet would be to attempt an in place repair of windows.
You will need to install all of the updates from windows update that you have done already.
but your files should still be in tact
