Server access to client serial port

Hi!

I am working in a large JSP-project.

We want to connect instruments to some client computers via their serial port. My question is: Is it possible for the server to "see" a particular clients serial port and this way transfer data directly from the instrument to the server?

If yes, please give a brief description of how.

Thanking the gurus in advance,

Nicolai

You could try using a signed applet

Technically you should be able to do this via a signed java applet. As I'm sure you know, applets run in sandboxes that prevent them from doing anything malicious but signing them allows the user to assign greater functinality to the applet.

Another option would be to create a web start application that the users can download.

There is no way to do it via JSP only as it is all run on the server not the client.

So here you are saying that the server cannot reach a clients serial port without extra software on the client? My goal would be to avoid the need of "fat clients"....

you need something running on the client that can access the port :)

Thanks a LOT to you both for fast and good replys. :-D

The answer was not what I had hoped for, but now I know that I can at least rule this out.

Best regards,
