Software testing for web apps
Posted on 2005-04-28
I own an ecommerce website and use a team a developers who in general do a good job. Our ecommerce website sells custom products on the front-end, and its attached to an also web-based back end with an order database, customer service area, and most importantly a workflow management system (assigns work, tracks order flow and updates customer area on website of progress).
The one area that I believe my development team is extremely weak on is testing. It takes us weeks or even months to work out the bugs, sometimes they are only spotted when customer transactions are improperly processed, etc (which can be embarrasing).
I basically do not think my development team is following best practices for testing. I want to know if anyone has any suggestions for a book I could read or a site I could look at that would help me understand what the best practices for testing are. I want to be able to grill the team on what testing procedures they are following and mandate that they pursue more tests before launching new versions of our website/software. Practically speaking, I only have 8-10 hours I could dedicate to my self study, so if anyone can provide me a pragmatic approach to getting smart (just basic details) quick on this, it would be very appreciated.
