Edit /etc/inittab
id:3:initdefault:  ====>  id:5:initdefault:

Then reboot. At login window, select "Session" to KDE and make it as default.

To make KDE the default session, you may also have to do following:
Login to the system.
Then at $ prompt try:
$ switchdesk kde
This will switch your session into KDE desktop from the next time you start your system.

Note you will still have to edit your inittab file.

try linuxconf or setup at the command line. it's been a while but i think one of those will give you a little gui action to configure that. startx or init 5 will bring you to 5 from the command line IIRC.
