How oracle executes "connect by prior" command

I came accross a feature in oracle 9i "connect by prior" which help us to view heirarchical data from oracle . I was really surprised to know about this command .

I am very interested to know how oracle is performing this function . Since i am more towards research , i like to know the internal working of oracle in order to execute this command . Can anyone help me
