What version of Crystal? What is your datasource?

If I am understanding you correclty just set your datasource and use a string parameter to filter the data in the record selection formula.

Depending on CR version you have different options.

In general the easy way is

    Open Crystal
    Select NEW REPORT
    Select the DATA SOURCE
    Select the TABLE(S)
    Select the FIELDS

You can then use the Select Expert to add the filtering
