Security of multifunction device

Im just wanting to get some info on risks.  We have a couple of networked printers which are also being used as photocopiers and fax machines (there all in one devices).  My concern is that as well as being connected to the LAN they are connected to the pstn as a fax machine.  How easy is it for someone to dial into the faxmachine and then use to start accessing the LAN?  Im really trying to weigh up the risk of these devices.

Also does anyone know if there are specific security solutions I can implment on the fax line which would remove the risk, besides having a seperate printer and fax machine.

Thanks in advance

Not possible, unless a company manufatures a fax machine as a gateway. The Modem for the fax machine will not be able to get on the network, however the network can get on the fax machine to access the modem. The software is not written to allow the reverse, and rightly so. I've not seen any 3-in-1 or 2-in-1 fax/printer's that allow a person to dial in the fax and access more than just printing off a fax. The modem only understands fax, it doesn't speak IP. This is why you can access the NIC in the fax, to then access the modem to place a fax call.
