SBS2000/EXCHANGE WONT DELIVER EMAIL TO USERS AFTER CHANGE FROM POP3 TO SMTP

I migrated one of our small offices SBS2000 server from POP3 on a dialup modem to ADSL and attempted to setup the server to recieve andhandle it's own mail. I have external DNS MX records set to it's static IP, users can send email to the world, and the server recieves emails into its SmallBusiness SMTP connector - (SMTP connector - Remote Delivery) and que's the emails, but then Rejects them, replying to the sender. Action: failed
Status: 5.3.5. This also seems the same for Local Delivery email.

The server is SBS2000 with Exchange and ISA.

What am I missing? Why wont the email deliver to the Mail Boxes? I have check the Default Recipient Policy, mail is actually coming into the server so I dont see it being an external DNS issue?

If i could reward 10,000 points for this question I would! HELP HELP HELP!

are you sure you have properly configured the SMTP connector?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/265293/EN-US/

It does appear that ISA is allowing the smtp traffice through, but that exchange doesnt know what to do with the messages. Any chance you could provide a sample from the SMTP connector log file?

Well i was about to go of course it does....

but ran the tester anyway.

Mail server found for domain:
- mail.phbbkoj.com.au (priority 10, ip address: 218.214.13.211)
    Mailserver identification:
sbs-koj.phbbkoj.com.au Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 5.0.2195.6713 ready at Mon, 2 May 2005 23:38:58 +0800
Server doesn't allow e-mail address verification

but i also ran one from network-tools.com which i use..

Validation results
Success

canonical address: <jamie@phbbkoj.com.au>

MX records preference exchange IP address (if included)
10 mail.phbbkoj.com.au [218.214.13.211]
SMTP session

but something i notcied was this! which has got me thinking!

252 2.1.5 Cannot VRFY user, but will take message for <jamie@phbbkoj.com.au>

Which would explain why the server is accepting the email, holding onto it then rejecting? Possibly somewhere Exchange is not linking in to the AD? I could be grasping at straws however...

not being able to verify the user is ok, because that prevents spam dictionary attacks from determining your correct addresses. I just wanted to make sure that the user still had a smtp address assigned on the email address tab ( i always check the obvious first instead of last) in case the default policy got screwed up and ran against the users account for some reason.

and this is happening to all accounts across the board correct?
