There was an error writing to LPT1.

I have a customer's computer. It is a MMX 233mhz/64mb/ win98SE. I tried to install an Epson Stylus C86 /parallel port. I followed the steps to install printer very carefully. The software was installed ok   thenI tried to print test page, a Printer folder message shows: There was an error writing to LPT1:for the printer EPSON Stylus C86 Series.Cannot access the port.It maybe in use by another program.Quit other programs and try printing again." I was able to print form DOS , like c:\ dir >LPT1 and now no even that command works. I have cheched previus solutions for this problem , like Device manager , remove LPT1 , then restart, making sure that in BIOS have parallel port mode: ECP+EPP 3 (Itried all the options like SPP,ECP 3 ,EPP) and Still same message. Also I replaced the parallel port, and still same problem.Just as a reference, this computer was infected whit a lot of spyware which were remove susccesfully.Even the harder one: dialerplatform .Please let me know some other options to make this brand new epson.I used new printer cable(gold plated connector)

Remove all the printer software and remove also the "Epson printer port", an Epson driver for Lpt1 is always installed.
Reboot the system, in the bios set the parallel port as Spp, save ad restart.
Now when Windows starts up the printer should not be recognized since parallel port works in unidirectional mode.
Select Start -> Settings -> Printer -> Add a new printer and select Epson Dlq 3000+ Esc p/2, as port select Lpt1 and finish installation.
Now access printer properties and try printing the test page within this driver.

If it works you can use the same procedure to install C86 driver (select "from disk" instead of printer name), it will execute a basic driver installation without adding things like the Epson status agent or the proprietary lpt1 driver, more suitable for low memory machines.

How did you replace the parallel port? Did you install another pci/isa board in the pc?

Download this file:

http://myprinter.altervista.org/test.prn

It's  binary file in Esc P/2 format, it contains raw data already formatted in Epson standard code.

Copy it to the root directory of your hard disk, restart the pc in MS-Dos mode, then at dos prompt move to c:\ (cd \) and enter the following command (ms-dos box won't work):

copy test.prn lpt1 /b

If the printer print out a simple test print contaning a short text message pc and parallel port are ok, otherwise you have an hardware problem.

I have a customer really in need of use her computer and printer as soon as posible , so I decide to find the quickest solution. I installed a 4port USB 2.0 PCI Card and installed the printer with this connector. Printer printing, problem solved. Now, I dont know how to thank you for your input. I really learned something from you.Do you know? Actually I really thank you for that but what I mean is about points...

Don't be worried about points, the most important thing was to carry out the job and have a satisfied customer.

I'm just sorry that you haven't had the possibility to run the test with raw binary data, it would have determined whether it was an hardware problem or not.
