Unable to Export a SQL Report to Excel

Hey Peeps,

Can somebody help me with my issue. I am trying to export a sql report from the report manager that is existing on remote box and all other reports are exporting just fine except for this one report. When I export this "One" report, it makes me wait for like 5 minutes(which is irritable for the client) and a page shows up saying "The page cant be viewed". At first, I thought it was a time out problem, and so I went to Report Manger--> Properties--> Execution and changed the default timeout option to 9999 seconds. But nothing worked!!! Can somebody throw some light here please!!!!

Many thnx
Jammer!

Try checking the log files under C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting Services\LogFiles to see if there are any errors being generated when you are trying to export the report to Excel.  First impressions are that it's a timeout / report size issue.  Is the report output large in terms of rows & columns?

JammerulesAuthor Commented:
not really, It is just a drill down report with just about 5 columns and 2 rows. Not at all much info in it. Is there anything else I am missing besides timeout???

Are all the other reports your exporting to Excel?
Does the report export ok if you run the export directly on the server hosting RS?

Yes sire, all other reports are just fine and exporting great.

Regarding the second question, it is a NO!
This one report, when I am trying to export it from my local box (like from the RS IDE on my machine) it just exports fine. only when I accessing remote box or when I terminal service to that box and do an export it is failing !! Pleaseeeeeeeee help    :)..It is my b'day today and I dont want to get myself into trouble today.....

Almost forgot, here is the log files report that popped  up soon after the report was executed. I dont know how to attach a file to this thread and hence I am pasting the whole stuff. Please bear with my ignorance!!!

Ok, I did try to export to excel in a different way and it worked partially well. What I did was, earlier my report I had like a few rows that drill down and simultaneously show values in the columns. And all the while, I was trying to export that way. But something struck to my mind and I removed all the drill down functionality and had them populate in the table plainly and then I exported. Behold!!! It worked. So now I see where the problem is. It is not exporting when there is something like a drill down logic. At the sametime, I need to have that drill down functionality. How do I get over it with the drill down functionality.???

Strange one, least you've narrowed it down a bit.  Drill down reports should export OK to Excel, have you applied SP1 or SP2 to your RS installation?  Do all of your drill down controls work OK within the report?

Yes..I am on SP1. I am not quite sure of how stable SP2 is  but that is gonna be my last resort!!!! And yeah, all my other drill down/plain reports are working fine

Have you extended the timeout on IIS? That may be an IIS page you're getting, not a RS page.

In IIS, right click in 'Default Web Site'

Next to Connection Timeout enter something ridiculous like 900 seconds and see if that helps.

actually, I have solved the problem myself. It was becuz we had a scheduled task that watches the CPU resources. So what happened was that -  since my report had about 5000 records in a drilling down fashion, it is taking like five minutes to get exported. and during the process it is using almost like 100% of the CPU usage which is triggering the schedule task which inturn is killing the application. It took me quite a while to figure this out. Anyways thanks guys for all the responses.

I hope no one minds me splitting the points between nmcdermaid and simon kirk

Glad you figured that one out, as I don't think we would have worked it out!
