File Tips in Windows 2000 Server
Hi EE,
I just wanted to know if there is a way to display file tips (the information that shows up when you hover over a file) in Windows 2000 Server. The clients are XP Pro.
When i create an excel document etc, in XP i can edit the summary tab in the document properties, then when i hover over the file, the summary details that i just entered in appear. However, when i copy that file to the server share the summary details do not show up when i hover over the file.
Is there an option in windows 2000 server that will allow me to view the file tips when the file is stored on windows 2000 server, and the file is being accessed from a windows xp pro workstation?
thanks,
mostym

No, this is not a server-side issue. This is a client-side issue.

Then why can i view the summary detail when it is on my windows xp desktop, but when i move it to the server share i cannot?
This sounds like a folder-specific view setting. If you go into Explorer->Tools->Folder Options, then examine the View tab, you will see several pertinent settings. If you are looking at the settings for the folder that you approve of, you could apply those settings to all folders. If you only want to "fix" this for the share you mention, you could browse to that point, and examine the same tab, but look for the appropriate checkbox. Good luck!
As TheMCSE write is a folder-specific view setting. If you go into Explorer->Tools->Folder Options, View tab and check "Show pop-up description for folder and destop items".
Also you can apply to all folders view pressing "Apply to All Folders".

This is definitely driving me insane.
On the network share, when i hover over the file, it only shows the Type, Size, and Date. However, when i copy that file to my desktop, all of the info included in the summary tab shows. Ive checked the folder options, and still can't figure out why this is not working.
Any other help would be greatly appreciated.

Can someone emulate the same situation that i am in. Create a network share with windows 2000 server. Fill in some info on summary tab for the file. Then browse the network share via a windows xp pro workstation. Hover over the file?

Sweet!..... Is there an easy way to deploy this via AD?
Group policy or login scripts can push a reg file silently.
regedit /s regfile.reg
will silently merge the registry file, regfile.reg, to the client workstation via a login script.
