There really should be a "PBX" or "telephone systems" section on this site, but VOIP will have to do for this question.

I'm running a nice VOIP PBX with Asterisk and I would like to get a 800 number for my clients to call me.  I'd like to get a specific number, 800-832-4927.  When I call the number I either get a fast busy or an error message stating "the number cannot be completed as dialed."

How can I find out who is owning or controlling this number currently?  A google search for that number yields absolutely nothing -> http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=800-832-4927

I have done a lot of google searching and I cannot seem to find any sort of database at all.

Any help would be great!

Best bet is to ask the company you want to use for 800 service to obtain it for you.  They'll have access to the database that you can't get.  They will be able to tell you if it's assigned or not, and if it's assigned might be able to broker the transfer.

You'll probably have better luck working with a business oriented, smaller CLEC.
