Windows XP can't read CD Drives

My mom has a machine that has a CD Burner and a separate DVD drive(possibly a burner).  She lives out of state so I can't actually look at her machine, unless someone wants to tell me how I can remote to her machine easily.  Anyway, the machine won't read CD's in either drive.  It's wierd it simply won't read the disks in either drive.   She was getting some errors about the disks not being formatted.  Any ideas on what could be the problem.

If she installed burning software, she may have the "upper and lower filters" problem, which will require some editing in the registry:;en-us;314060

She can also try removing the drivers for the opticals in device manager and let them reinstall on reboot.

You should be able to connect remotely, just tell your mom to click on start, all programs, Remote assistance, which will start a wizard where she has to enter your email address and a username and password for you. You will then get this mail, which you can click on and which will then connect to her PC. She'll probably have to accept you connecting, and then you should be able to access that PC...

The rest Cal's already told you.
