Looking for help or info on using a map to search a database

I have a large web project that I'm working on that involves a database search for companies. To be more specific I want to be able to use a map say the map of Alberta and allow web visitors the ability to clickon various cities on the map. In turn they would get a list of home builders that build house in those cities. So my question is can anyone point me in to a website that can provide me  some help in that area, or has anyone done this and how did you build it. Was it in flash or what would be the best way to do it. Any help in this area would be appreciated thanks.

I did'nt finish this, and you would want to make the hotspots smaller, but this demonstrates how easy it is to do this with an image map.

Below the map is the SQL querystring that would be executed assuming I had a table of builders by region.  As I said, you can reduce the size of the hotspots to query by city or other smaller areas.

The ASP is overly simple for the example, but I think it is easy enough to see what will happen if we add the database access code.  The key is the query responding to the image click.

If you have lots of money, there's ArcWeb from ESRI.  See http://arcweb.esri.com/sc/realestate/index.html for an example.

While I normally advise against WYSIWYG editors, image maps are much easier to do with that type of editor.  Sorry I didn't have a fancier example.
