Remote Desktop Connection window closes upon login

I'm having a problem when I try to use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to my work computer from home.  What happens is that I login to my business VPN, then I remote desktop to my work PC.  The login window comes up, and I enter my username and password.  As soon as I enter my login and press enter, the Remote Desktop window closes.  When I look at my work PC the next day, the monitor shows Frequency Out Of Range and I have to manually restart my work PC.

This has happened to me when I tried using both Windows Me and Windows XP from home.  What can I do to make this work?

Have you tried to simply turn off your monitor when you leave work.

That was the answer, that and actually logging out of my work PC instead of just locking it.  Works great!
