Automatically update hyperlinks in MS Word

I use hyperlinks in MS Word 2002 to link to documents I am referencing, which all reside on my hard drive.  If I move or rename the file referenced in the hyperlink, I have to manually edit the link with the new name/location.  Is there a way to make the hyperlink automatically update with the new name/location?

Thanks

Then no - I know of no way to automatically update hyperlinks when the name of a document changes.

Have you tried:

Tools, Options, General, Update Automatic Links at Open?

This option updates the information in a linked file, but what I need is the reference in the hyperlink to update. Example:  hyperlink to c:\data\123.doc, and I change the name to c:\data\1234.doc.  The hyperlink no longer works unless I manually edit it to c:\data\1234.doc.

There is no way to do this.

A hyperlink is not really a link; it is text in a document and it is resolved only when clicked. Just like a hyperlink on a web page it will be dead after its target is renamed.
