We are currentley seeing a problem where some users on a DHCP scope. If you ping there host name an incorrect Ip Address is shown.
If you ping the same host name from a different machine the correct IP address is shown.

Not sure whats happening but DHCP must be picking up it's old relased IP Address I imagine.

Can anyone confirm what is happening and why?

    Accepted Solution

First scavenge DNS database to remove old records.
Secondly set the DHCP duration lease to high if it is low (recommended is 8 days for desktop pcs and 1 day for Roaming users.)

    >>>If you ping there host name an incorrect Ip Address is shown.

From where you ping their host name from the same pc or from other pc on the network?

    >>>If you ping the same host name from a different machine the correct IP address is shown.

That means there is problem with this pc i assume so far. Make sure this pc is configured to use DNS server for your network. DNS Client service will send DNS Query to DNS Server if client is configured for it and if not then will send broadcast.

    Please present a network scenario.

    Let me know.

    Assisted Solution

    Hi fleetsupport,
if some of your machines can ping by name the other, but some cannot, the problem lies in your DNS, most likely in cache records.
First of all, have you tried using ipconfig /flushdns on one of those machines? If after that you can resolve successfully any name, then follow SystmProg suggestion to increase DHCP release duration, this should make less probable the creation of "zombie" records. If you noted that the problem is more frequent on laptops or PC not used everyday, then you can be sure this is a DHCP-related issue.
    Hope it helps, Elbereth.
