Turning On Speaker Sound..

I have just reinstalled Windows XP for somebody who still uses a dial up modem and likes to hear the dialling noises. By default they are now disabled. I have checked that the speaker is turned on on the modem but there is still no sound.

How can I enable the modem to emit its jangly tones when dialling???

For Jangly fun:
Go to start>settings>control panel>phone and modem options>modems

Click on your modem and click properties
Click on modem and pull your speaker volume up from Off to whatever volumes you wish.

As long as your main speaker is also enabled and working - you should get all the noises

The speaker is enabled but there are no external speakers so that doesn't work. Isn't there a way to enter a command to get the modem speaker to make a sound??

Some internal and external modems have their own speaker onboard - independent of the soundcard.  If your model has one of these, there may be an option in the modems software but by the look of things - your only option is to use speakers.  Most modems are v basic and don't offer many options other than the standard.  Can you check that the sound does work by putting a set of speakers on just as an interim test?

If it is entirely necessary to get the modems own speaker to work (if it has one), post the modems model and I'll check it out

I can't get to the pc until next week now. It is probably just a generic internal model but I'll find out...

And some of the newer 'soft modems' have no speaker at all, relying upon the PC Sound card.  no sound card / speakers, ... no dialing sound.       I like hearing the sound to as at least you know something is working !

But since it was working before, you probabbly can get it working again by installing the modem software pack.
it can be that it is not XP compatible though; then you need to look on the manufacturers site.

What ISP software are you using? Try the setup options in that application. Most have a volumn setting option.
