how to make sure HAL is compatible for riprep imaging....
I made some riprep images on a computer and uploaded them to the RIS server. When I tried to install one to test it on another computer it wasn't listed.
According to MS:
"If the target computer is not compatible with the source computer's HAL, the image is not displayed in the client computer's installation menu"
If that's the case, how can I make sure that the HAL of the computer I'm making the images on will be compatible with other computers that I will be installing it to?
(The computer that I made them on is a Pentium (1GHz), 512MB RAM and a Intel 100+ Nic, which definately makes the minimum hardware standards for the riprep.)

I can see all of the 'base' images, just not the custom ones that had the additional software on them. I also went to the RIS server in AD and the images are ALL there, even the custom ones. They just don't show up when you boot a computer with the NIC card. Like I said, just the base images.
I just can't think of what would cause this...

I did find this link:
http://www.local.nu/HelpDesk/index.php?title=Cloning_Windows_and_replacing_motherboards
concerning the compatibility of the HAL and motherboards. When I get in on Monday I'm going to see what it says in Device Manager about the computer I made the image from and the computers I was trying to do the install on.
Hopefully that's the solution here and it just needs to be changed so that it's compatible with all the other ones.

Cool , if you solved your own problem, make sure you post a message to the support area - ask them to convert the question to a paq, and refund your points - this way the solution will exist on EE for others to see (or yourself if you need it again someday!)

I took a look at the computer that I made the images on and then all the other HAL's we have in use at the office via computer management > Device manager
it seems that the image computer is using a HAL that the other two I tried to install it on does not. I'm going to see if I can find a computer that uses a common HAL and then test whether it can see the image just to make sure, but it looks like the HAL is responsible.
That means I'm going to have to have 3 different copies of each riprep image I create. :(

yup, just booted with another computer on the network that had the matching HAL as the one that I made the images with and the CD images and riprep images were all there.
No Objections from me!
