This is a very generic question, information is readily available elsewhere.
Try to go through the Linux documentation, e.g.

--for setting up your server as a network router
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/other-formats/html_single/IP-Masquerade-HOWTO.html

ALso, what exactly do you mean by a File server....an FTP server??

Hi Manav.  Thanks for responding.  I think let me restrict my question to firewall and file server.  By  firewall, I meant using samba for  about 10 - 15 windows users.  Firewall to protect the permanent connection

Please go through the LINUX HOWTO(s) for these. They cover a broad range of topics and will provide you with exactly what you need.

If you do not understand something, or get stuck in some place, do post back here. Specific queries are answered much better than an open-ended question.

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/other-formats/html_single/

has a listing of all HOWTO(s). Search for 'samba'. For the HOWTO regarding setting up your linux box as a router, see my earlier post.
