Unable to open .WMV in Powerpoint

I am getting this error message when trying to open a .wmv file in PowerPoint:

'Some controls on this presentation can't be activated.
They might not be registered on this computer'

I've been able to view this on other computers and I suspect that it may have something to do with Active-X controls. I can launch the .wmv in Windows Media Player just fine. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

There is a relatively new addin for powerpoint that basically takes any media file, looks at it, decides how best to convert it, then converts it for maximum compatibility to ensure reliable playback in powerpoint.

See PFC Media (Plays for Certain)

Where did the .wmv file come from?
