AD Users and Computers displayed name is inconsistent

Why does the "name" column of AD Users and Computers show some users as <first name> <last name> and others as <last name>, <First name> and how can I change it? It seems that users prior to the upgrade to Windows 2000 have the first format, and users added since have the latter.

I've changed the display name, but to no effect. Everything else looks identical between two users with the different formats.

The "Name" column in ADUC is the user's "distinguished name". You can change this by right-clicking the user name in ADUC directly (not by opening the user's profile), then choosing "Rename". Yes, that's a result from upgrading.
