If you're logged in as the domain admin (and haven't messed around with any of the group assignments by default), then you just install exchange.  The domain admin account, default name "administrator" has all the rights it needs to install it.

Join a particular domain?  Not sure what your talking about.  You need a domain, but that's about it.

You also have to be part of the Enterprise Admins, and Exchange Admins in order to extend the AD schema and allow exchange attributes to be written to AD.

Then why not tell us what groups you have the domain admin account in?
