I downloaded a ffree MSDN2000 sql server (I am a beginner) and I amnaged to start a server named HOME\MASSIMO.

I do not know If I can change the name of this server and if so how( please step by step)

Also, can I add a new server instance ?

Thanks

Yes, you can add a new instance....re-run setup and specify a named instance.

For the first question, are you wanting to change the name of the server or the SQL Server?

Thanks Kevin,

I would like to change the name of the server
Depending on the O/S, probably right click on the  My Computer icon, properties, computer name and follow the directions there.  The SQL Server name will not automatically change with it.

Well. I think that I'll keep this name...

The reason of all this is because every time that I restart my Pc (WIN XP PRO) I have to re-type the server name in the SQL service manager try icon application. I wonder why he does not detect it automatically....
Why are you even looking at the SQL Service Manager?  What is your end goal here?

My end goal was to start or stop the SQL server without going in control panel /admin tools etc .....

Therefore I found this application into the SQL folder and I launched.....

As I told you I am a beginner with SQL (basically I am a beginner in every aspect of programming) and I prepared my computer with all the tools to learn VB.NET (visual Studio), PHP ASP SQL C# and C++.

I am doing a Honour Degree in computing (2nd year) and in the summer I study by myself....

while I am writing here I an actually studying VB.NET (Sams teachyourself in 21 days...)

OK....and the issue was that the SQL Server name was not appearing and you had to type it in?  I have no idea why that would be happening....have you opened Enterprise manager and registered the local SQL Server?

Have you also installed SP3?  very important to learn on sp3 or better :-)

No Idea of what is Enterprise Manager....
Enterprise Manager should be in the SQL Server program group and is the main utility for administering SQL Servers.

I apologise, but in the folder MSDEReIA (which is the folder that has been created after the installation of MSDE2000A.exe, I do not have any program group named SQL... maybe I downloaded the wrong thing, but was the only free one. Basically I downloaded this one in order to study SQL with VisualStudio.Net

DO you know another free SQL server package ?

Yes I think so.....

Maybe later on I will think about buying a more complete product....

However, thanks for your time Kevin
The developer edition of SQL Server is only $49.  Can't use it for production purposes, but that is the only limitation I am aware of

Hmmmm,

I may think to buy it.... do you have the link for it and also I suppose I need to disinstall this version first....
and then install the new one

Personally, I would start clean, but you can install developer and MSDE on the same system.  If you have them both running, they are going to compete for memory...
