Search Engine Optimization Software

I am considering taking on the task of achieving top ranking for or website as apposed to paying an SEO company loads of cash to do so. Aside from consultants knowlege of SOE I understand they must have thier tools of the trade as well. If I too could get the right tools I believe I could achieve success in certain areas as well. So my questions is what are some of the best software tools for keyword analysis, creating door way pages, monitoring positions of certain pages and reverse engineering of competitors webpages that range high?

I was considering Web Position Gold because they have been around for awhile.. Any one having any success with any other tools? What are some of the tools to stay away from?

The key tools of the trade are information, persistence, and monitoring results.

Information: Google specifically recommends AGAINST using Web Position Gold . . . and doorway pages, for that matter.

There are some handy tools online, but they're of little use until you have the basics down.  You should review Google's Webmaster Guidelines (www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html - look for the WPG reference) and Yahoo's Quality Guidelines (http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearch/basics/basics-18.html) to get an idea what the search engines are looking for.

Also, get a handle on the fundamental SEO techniques - www.seo-guy.com/tutorial.html.

Then you may be able to make use of some tools like these: www.webmaster-toolkit.com (but don't skip the steps above).

Finally, make liberal use of the E-E Online Marketing TA  :)

Is the website for business or fun?  If it is for business and you know very little about SEO then I would strongly recommend that you call in the professionals.  We have a constant stream of potential clients knocking on our door who have spent months (sometimes years) trying to SEO their sites and have got themselves into a complete and irrecoverable mess. Without exception these, otherwise quite rational people, have been persuaded to use a wide range of 'tools' that have promised them top positions. The plain fact is you don't actually need any tools you just need to know how to do it and preferably had a lot of experience doing it.

We also get a large number of site owners who have been misadvised by so called SEO consultants simply because for every good SEO consultant there are thousands of bad ones. The Accepted Answer in this PAQ http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Online_Marketing/Q_21016555.html outlines a basic procedure to help you make the right choice.

If you are planning to try to "game" the system, have some additional domains waiting in the wings to replace your original domain once it gets banned.  Don't look for ways to trick your way into the top search results, start by planning to create a quality web site, with lots of unique and useful content, with an outstanding navigation system.  Even some of the "top" SEO firms are now finding their web sites have disappeared from Google.

Start by designing your website, and its content, with the user in mind.  Remember, search engines feed on text, so don't use flash and definately stay away from frames.  I just took on a new client who had their web site switched to frames about a year ago--within 30 days their traffic dropped to 10% of what it used to be.  It's going to take a while to bring it back.

Be sure each page has a relevent title and description that includes the key words.  See http://internetresults.blogspot.com for some interesting info on how Google uses titles and meta descriptions.

When writing text for your pages, be sure to include the targeted keywords on each page, but focus on writing copy that is easy to read and delivers your message.

Once your web site is up, start to get it noticed by getting it listed in all the free directories.  The blog I referenced above has a posting that includes a link to a directory of directories.  How you go about link building from that point depends on what your web site is about.

The site is for business and I do not plan on trying to spam or hack my way into top rankings. I plan on playing by the rules and already have a good grasp on most of the more basic SEO concepts.
