Enterprise Manager cannot register new server - SQL 2000

SQL server Enterprise manager thows up an error  - The instruction at "0x780104ac" referenced at 0x01a5ba39" memory could not be "read" , when you try to register a new remote SQL server. This error re-appear on reboot. I looks like a memory error rather that entrrprise manager. The server only has SQl tools installed. Any ideas?

I think you are having compatibility problems. You should have only OS and SQL Server. Formatting and reinstalling should resolve it.
(I know that's what you don't wanted to heard)! :O

Format?  Nah...

Uninstall and re-install the client tools for SQL Server

>>The server only has SQl tools installed. <<
>>refresh services on the SQL Server Service Manager console<<

Does this box have SQL Server, or just the tools?

Kev, I uninstalled and reinstalled now with a default instance of SQl server ...the error starts as soon as you refresh services or try to register new server.... I am fresh out of ideas............

Like I said: Format

My guess is that some dll was substituited with a new one, and there's why you having problems.

Format a SQL Server to find a dll issue?  Kind of like killing mosquitos with a bazooka :-)

Go get Dependency Walker form here: http://www.dependencywalker.com/
It might be able to help you track down which .dll or .exe is giving you trouble.

It's a time matter. How much time he will loose more?
And I think it's a client machine, not a server, right sjumu?

sjumuAuthor Commented:
Unfortunately its a Windows 200 Server and I will loathe having to rebuild if I can help it

Kevin3NFCommented:
Would that be Windows 2000 or 2003?  Was it an upgrade from 2000 to 2003 or a clean install?  And  as VMontalvao asked, is it a client machine or server (meaning does  the machine have SQL Server services, or just the client tools)?

sjumuAuthor Commented:
Kevin,  it is a Windows 2000 Sevrver SP4 it and as stated earlier it has intalled one default instance of SQL server and client tools SP3, MDAC 2.7

Kevin3NFCommented:
Did you try the dependency walker?

sjumuAuthor Commented:
Thanks Kevin,

The Dependency Walker picked up some dll errors caused by the application of SP4 ...effective disabled MDAC2.7. There is an MDAC 2.1 SP1 (Refresher) that fixes the problem.

Thank all of you for you contribution

Vitor MontalvãoMSSQL Senior EngineerCommented:
Good. You didn't need to format the server! :)

Kevin3NFCommented:
Ahhh....I thought it was sp3...sp4 is being reported as buggy (still early though), espwecially in areas such as large memory configuration
