adding a usb high speed hub controller port system so i can use USB 2.0

when i plug in my new burning devices they only work at minmial speed bc i have an older computer with a usb 1 hub. i see there are hubs i can by like the       SYBA 5-PORT PCI USB 2.0 HUB HIGH SPEED ADAPTER CARD

If i buy one will it work since i only have a compaw presario 5140 desktop with alot of RAM but everything else as is when bought in 98'?

It might, but you will still only connect at USB 1 speeds.

If you have a spare PCI slot in your compaq, there is no problem adding such a card (If you can figure out how to open the compaq). Read the manual of the card for info on how to do the installation (with some hardware you first have to install the software before the hardware, for others it is the other way round).

Since it is an older Pc, i cannot say it will work; it depends on the bios. So it would be a cut and try thing. Or :

You need to see what version PCI the adapter card needs and then find out what PCI version your motherboard will support.

USB adapter cards often require PCI 2.2 or 2.3, your motherboard may be 2.0 or 2.1 in which case you'll never get it to work. A bios update won't upgrade the PCI standard of your motherboard.
