Activating Windows XP Media Center edition 2005

Hi All!

I installed a copy of Windows XP media center 2005 as a test drive on my PC, without activating it. The allowed period lasts for 60 days. Unfortunately I was ubsent for a long time and the allowed period without activation expired. So whenever I try to login I get the activation prompt and I can not go any further. The question is, can I purchace my own copy of windows media center edition 2005, and use the info from the new one to activate my already installed operating system? I don't want to proceed activating the product using the original product key for several reasons including: someone else bought it, is not valid, uncertain what will happen if the key is not valid (I don't want to lock up the system for ever), etc. Please advise. Formating is not an option, I need to access the PC and continue using it as is.

Regards

If the new copy that you purchase is the same version then it will work without any problems.

Go for it! :-)

what if the copy I purchace is a different version? I don't have a way to check that.

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

Just use the new activation key and see what happens. If it doesn't work it won't start automatically formatting your system ;=)  and theres a good chance that it will. If it doesn't work, then just ring the Microsoft Support script monkeys on your local toll free number and tell them your activation code isn't working, and they'll fix you up. You haven't done anything wrong as long as you pay for a Media Center license.

You have nothing to lose.

Activate with your new key and your OS will start working correctly.

I've purchades a license from Greece, to use it at where I am in the middle east (cause it was not available)...it didn't work (I got a "Invalid Product key") I called microsoft and the guy told me that the product I purchased has a valid product key...but its an OEM version and should be only purchased with a new hardware...so he suggested returning it and getting my money back...in the question I put..."Ok...but how will activate this product with my own licence?" he answered: "Windows XP media center are only to be destributed with hardware and be preloaded on it" so the conversation ended in " I am sorry ..there is nothing we can do"...

Any other Ideas?

What MS has told you is that you cannot have a valid license - since Media Center licenses can only be obtained with hardware.  That means that there is no legal solution, and the terms of use on Experts Exchange do not allow anyone to help you circumvent the law.

"" I am sorry ..there is nothing we can do"..."

Just a comment: How did the Windows XP Media center got to my friends hands (after my request) from a computer shop for 150 Euros, after the computer shop employee made a phone call to Microsoft? Somebody is selling staff they shouldn't.
