Upgrade to 2k3

I have a windows 2000 domain with 150 users. There is only one domain controller. I want to introduce a second domain controller into the domain. I would like that second DC to be windows 2003. Does any one know of any complications I might have. dcpromo and thats it?

Thanks,

Donnie

Even with the caveats from the links that leew has given you....they will help you prepare for the upgrade....don't be intimidated...this is not a big deal.

Best way to go is to bring a W2K memberserver up as a second Windows 2000 DC....then shut it down and take it off line.....then introduce your 2003 server, run all the schema/forest prep and then run the upgrade. If that doen't go as planned, you still have your original W2K AD domain around on the second DC and can bring everything back as needed.

Do read and take heed of leew's links.....but understand that with the proper prep and planning, this is almost always a straightforward process.

Before you promote the Server 2003 server to a DC you will want to run from adprep.exe /forestprep and adprep.exe /domainprep from the Server 2003's i386 directory.  This prepares Windows 2000's AD for the new Schema changes.  I would perform this on the Schema Master with a user that is logged on that belongs to the Schema Admins.  That is all that is needed for the updated but take a look at some of the links that leew posted and the ones below.

Here is a list of things to look out for that I put together on my site:
