Serial data, simple example

I am going to learn how to communicate via serial port to a pic microcontroller. In VB6 I know there was a way of just dropping a control on to the form and sending data to it which in turn outputs it to the serial port. Could you tell me if such a control exists in C#, how I can use it preferably with examples. I am very new to this so please bear with me!

Yes there is ... this functionality is built into 2.0 but I assume you are still using 1.1....

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vcsharp/downloads/samples/libraries/default.aspx?pull=/msdnmag/issues/02/10/netserialcomm/default.aspx includes a library for serial i/o in managed code (1.1) and also includes an example app of how to use it.

Do you think moving away from serial communication to something like USB is the way to go, does C# have any functions to deal with USB communication easily?
Another concern is if I can program a PIC microcontroller to deal with it. I know the data transfer rate is significantly higher in USB than the speed most pics run at. I am aware though there are new pics that can do it, But I dont know how hard it will be!
I am currently trying to find information about USB communication.
