Problem in Network Connection

Hey experts,

I am using Red Hat Linux 8, upon restarting, it's not being able to bring up interface eth0.......the error is "device 8139cp not found....", and then I am not being able to configure it because it is not finding the interface.....any help on configuring the interface??

Try running netconf and using the 8139too driver.

i think your card is not a 8139too or the kernel not have the driver compiled.

(divert: no divert_blk to free, eth0 not ethernet)
I had this same kind of error before. and after surfing the web for long time, found it is a warning but does not harm.

for your card, please put here the output of

dmsg | grep Ethernet

and

dmesg | grep eth0

and the output of

lspci

with that, we will be able to help you better and propose an answer sooner.

dmesg | grep Ethernet is returning nothing now

lspci is returning:

a) what it this about "VGA compatible controller: VMWare Inc: Unknown device 0405"
is this an emulated computer (using vmware)?

b) 00:11.0 Ethernet controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] 79c970 [PCnet LANCE] (rev 10)
this will never work with the 8139too...
    I would use pcnet32 module.
    try :
    modprobe pcnet32
    ifconfig eth0 up
to see if you sucseed, issue ifconfig and you should see your eth0 there
if you have a dhcp server, you can get ip using:
dhcpcd eth0  (or if you are on a redhat-like distro, use dhclient eth0)
    or use service network restart
