oh boy....

basically the Windows 2000 professional edition is used on the computers that the general users work with.
the many Server editions are used by the geeks in the back room.

2000 server editions create and control the logical backbone of a network...

My questoin is this, at our current situation we have 2000 Server running to serve a web page.  This is all it seems to be doing, this can be done on Windows 2000, which we have copy of, so it is cheaper to pay someone to uninstall and format the machine and install 2000 Pro and IIS.  Host the web site and pay much less for AntiVirus & Firewall.

People here can not give me a good reason why they had 2000 Server isntalled.  I think who ever chose this decided to use a A-bomb to do what a hammer could do.  he he.  But I just want to make sure before we switch over.

Thanks,
Sporenza

The first thing is file sharing. Professional will only allow 10 connections from different users. Server will allow muuuuch more. Critical if you have server software the employees use.

Windows 2000 comes in several versions. Windows 2000 Professional is a desktop operating system for workstations designed to replace Windows NT Workstation and Windows 95/98 in corporate environments. It can support 2 processors, as well as multiple monitors. Windows 2000 Server supports 4 processors and is designed to fill the role of typical domain controller, file and print server, application server, and other common tasks. Windows 2000 Advanced Server is designed for high end mission critical platforms, supports 8 processors, and includes support for  2 way server clustering. Windows 2000 DataCenter Server goes even further than Advanced Server in that it can support up to 32 processors, cascading failover among 4 nodes, and 32 node network load balancing.

Craylord nailed your situation with the first statement.
you can only have 10 people access your webpage at a time with 2000 pro.
if you never have more than 10 simultaneous connections or dont care if the users of the website get unaccessable errors if the website is too busy.... pro could work but it could frustrate your users.

if it is just for hosting a web site.. look into the Web Edition of server

Other things, you can use it for terminal services as described on this page. Things listed here you typically wont be able to do on 2000 Professional.
