How Do I Install Win2k Adv. Server on a RAID-5 array ...

Hi:

I have a server with 3 40GB IDE hard drives.  These drives are hooked to an Adaptec RAID controller.
I used the CTRL-M function during POST to access the Adaptec RAID controller BIOS.  I was able to
setup a RAID-5 array via the Adaptec BIOS.

When I restarted the system, the RAID-5 was 'seen' during POST.  I was happy at this point.

Now, I am sort of at a stopping point.  I am not sure how I should properly install Win2k so that it uses the RAID-5 container.

Can someone tell me if I am on the right track, and/or what it is that I should do to get Win2k installed and run under the RAID-5 that I setup already?

Thanks in advance!

You are on the right track. You should be able to install Win2k at this point. During the setup Win2k will see the hard drive space configured by the raid. It's at this point you can set up the partition with Win2k during the install (6gb?) and add the rest as another drive when done. Or just use all the space during setup. But overall, you're on track.
Also, just run the first part of the Win2k setup. If it sees the same amount of space available when you configured your raid5, then youre good to go.

Well, the server I am trying to do this on is NOT a Dell box.
It is a 'clone' 2U with an Adaptec 2400A IDE RAID-5 controller.
I have 3 40 GB IDE drives attached to it.

What do you think .... should I get the RAID controller drivers from Adaptec?

I'm sorry, I don't know WHERE I saw the word Dell.  In which case, use option two.
So, basically, I need a working driver for the RAID card before the install starts.
Is there a chance that the Win2k CD might have it already?

always a chance, but unlikely if it's a newer card.  (The card would have to be 5+ years old for drivers to be built in to 2000).
I try tomorrow both ways:

1.  D/L the Adaptec 2400A Win2k Drivers
2.  Straight install from the Win2k (SP4) disc

Just remember, F6 EARLY in setup - read the early screens carefully and quickly - it will prompt you.  NT4 had same issue, only that was even trickier - it never asked you to hit F6 - you just had to know to do it.
