Can I install X after TEXT BASED install?

I have an old TIGERBOOK NOTEBOOK 333mhz 64mb ram. Trying to install VECTORLINUX 4.3 Install goes fine until X WINDOWS setup where it just hangs. Im thinking funky video chipset. Is there a backdoor around this to install TEXT BASED FIRST and then X or some other graphical interface? Very little online for this notebook-if at all.

UH....Text based didn't work either...

Here's what is going on....

After attempting to install X during setup, install stops with this message:
/usr/bin/linux: cannot create/mnt/loop/veclinux/linux7.bat:directory non-existant.
PLEASE PRESS ENTER TO ACTIVATE CONSOLE

Everything was hunky dory up until now. Now I'm really stuck after extricating myself from some other LINUX problems before this. TEXT BASED install had exactly the same problem. What can I do???
it's an offshot, but after getting into the console, you can try:
mkdir -p /mnt/loop/veclinux/

and retry the x installation
OK.....I got into X and finished the install! But not with your suggestion..so sorry!!... Now I need to get LILO installed . I am still booting straight into win98. I have a LINUX BOOT DISK (TOM) with lots of utilities including LILO...but how do I go about this?>
