If you want to connect only these two laptops, you should not need an access point. Give static IP addresses to each of the computers' network interfaces (laptop 1: 192.168.0.1, laptop 2: 192.168.0.2, subnet mask for both: 255.255.255.0) and open the firewall of XP. Put both into the same Workgroup. Share a folder and have same users and passwords on both, and networking should already work. Try it, and let us hear your results.

Regards,
has.

even m using the wireless lan at our home between 2 laptops n one desktop . both laptop is wifi enabled . it just required one wireless lan card n the access point to make them work under lan . also we can do that without accesspoint . these days we hv usb wireless lan doungles which acts as both the wireless lan card n as well as access point. so just we neeed to attach that through the desktop n make it run under access point mode  (its zyxcel 220 ) .
