You have mail indicator not canceling

I get the message in the little box on the screen that tells me I have mail. "Do you want to read it?"
I click yes and read the mail.
I then close the mail message  by clicking the little cross, top right.
However, I get the message that "I have mail" shown again, and its for the same piecce of email.
How do I get is so that when I cancel the message," new mail..." it stays canceled?

I believe you would have to disable that function altogether so that it never gives that notification "Do you want to read it ?"
I am curious to know if you have OL 2000

davidjvincent,

I enabled the option in my OL 2002 and it doesnot appear to behave the same way as it is for you. I downloaded around 30 new emails , i got that box that asks "do you want to read it ",i say yes , i read an email , i close that email and the first box never popped up again.

do you have the latest service pack for your outlook .. It shud not really matter but try with that.

It appears that it may not be a case of not cancelling the little message box, there appear to be two boxes deployed, one layed over the other, that arrives with the message.
I will keep an eye on this to confirm, and hopes this helps with solving this problem.

I have further checked this and it is as I suspected.
Two identical messages, one hidden behind the other, both saying that " I have mail. Do I want to read it", come in when mail is detected.
So when I click on "yes", the one I click on is eliminated, as normal, but leaving the other to pop up later, after I have read the mail.
Hopes this helps.
