asked on

upgrade for Mac os 9.1

This Apple Mac  model is M5884 OS 9.1 with 1Gb Ram.
Can this OS be upgraded?
If it can what is the "best" version to go to, and how do I start to do it.
As always its not mine, it's the bosses one and as the support guy (PCs and MS) I have been delegated to update this. Which with the assistance of the experts I will try to do.
Thanking you in advance

The most recent version of the classic MacOS is 9.2.2
The most recent version of Mac OS X is 10.4.1

If the powerbook is sufficiently old (and with 9.1 it sounds old),
you will likely need to upgrade its firmware before attempting  to
install a newer OS:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117

Users can update from Mac OS 9.1 to 9.2.2 free of charge.
Apple has not updated Mac OS 9 for over 4 years.  Apple and most
3rd party software developers no longer provide applications that run
under Mac OS 9.   Here is a chart of Apple's 9.x updates:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75288

Apple's Guide to upgrading a Mac from 9.1 to 9.2.2 or OS X:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacOS9.2.2-10.1.1_Upgrade.pdf

If you wish to upgrade to Mac OS X, but still maintain the ability to
run older mac apps in "Classic mode" (Mac OS 9.x emulation mode),
you must first upgrade the firmware (if needed), then upgrade to
Mac os 9.2.2 (see above), then upgrade to OS X.  Upgrading from
OS 9.1 to Mac OS X is not free.  Apple lists the price of the most
recent version at $129, but you can probably get it cheaper online
at amazon.  If you are a student, or have a child that is a student,
or know someone who might be a student, you can get an educational
discount ($79).  If you don't want to get the newest 10.4 (Tiger),
you can probably pick up Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) or 10.3 (Panther)
quite inexpensively.  10.2.8 or 10.3.8 should run well with acceptable
performance on an older powerbook.

Hi multihull,
Since you have a Powerbook G4 with 1GB RAM,   OS X should run fine.

Thanks,
Steven Stuart
Hi Multihull,
Here are the Technical Specs, they require 256 MB RAM, but I would not run it with less then 512 MB RAM and even then at times it could be slow.  However, you have that covered with 1GB RAM.   However, here are the Tech Specs.  I have also been hearing that Tiger runs faster then Panther and Jaguar, but I think RAM is a major factor, but these tests have been done on the same platform.

Thanks for info so far, it has helped define the next stage of upgrade. Will go for Tiger, but I do have some further questions for which the points have been raised.

To go to Tiger which is a new OS I have to basically reinstal ihe OS on the MAC. It only has a DVD/CD Rom, I have no FW DVD/HDD/CD to burn data on.
I will have to backup data and some programs.
My "easiest option" would be to partition the HDD on the fly leaving the 9.1 system/data/programs in the partition. On the new partition install Tiger and retreive data and programs not covered in new OS.
Question - can I do this with available SW on drive or is new software / shareware available, if so which in your opinions is good?
I have done some searching and this seems to be a question on Google rather than a solution.
This is a daft qestion but as I am not used to Macs, what is the best system too to copy stuff around. Looking for something like "windows explorer" with its drop and drag but culd see nothing on the Macs menu bars other than system and file information. I'm sure I am missing something as its supposed to be straight forward. Please note I have only the Mac and no manuals so I try to use the onscreen help.

The boss uses AOL with dial up, I do not have password and do not want it. Being able to use my broadband with a network connection would be great but how?

Thanks for all help

hi Multihull,
Before doing anything I would try backing up the data somehow, just in case.   You could always try to get a FireWire HD and backit up that way, this is assuming that you have Firewire capability though, which of course is a requirement to upgrade.  I believe all G4 had them.

You can try iPartition to partition your HD assuming that it is HFS+, which I believe it is for OS 9.  Here is a link to get that software.

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23828

You can read up on it as well, to see if that is what you wish to use.  I believe that it was one of the partitioning softwares mentioned in MacWorld not that long ago.  I have to find it.  It does seem to be one of the most used.

To get you in you would need to setup the Mac thru the Network settings, pretty much like you would in Windows, and use pretty much the same setting you would if it was a PC.  The network part would be the same.   I can not remember the exact path to get there in that system, but I think it might be something like the Apple menu and then Control panels and then Network, but I could be wrong.   Just in case the setup in there is not saved, which I believe you can do, save it, and also copy his settings down just in case you need to go back to it, and also for whenever you get OSX up and running.  You can save your network setting in there as well, so after the first time you can just toggle back and forth.   I also can not remember if you need to restart in between, but I do not believe that you do.

Thanks,
Steven Stuart

Will be starting over weekend, hope next comment is success

Hi Bernie,
I hope so as well.   Just in case.  the link above is just to the latest upgrade, I saw that after the fact, I am sure that you will see that.  On that same link it gives you the option of a commercial paid version, which I am assuming would be what you need.   However, here is a link directly to their site if you need it.

Steve,
Have not advanced much, I usually walk arond kicking tyres turning the wheel before using the switch. Need to have an idea of how deep the water may be etc etc etc.
The G4 does not have a cd / dvd writer so cannot backup using internals. That was why I was looking at partioning.
iPartition will partion on fly but needs OSx 10, bit late by then, but I think it will not partition its boot disk. Partion magic has a product that supposedly runs with OS9 but only on the Classic.
So appear to be stumped on these fronts.
I can put a firewire adapter on my (ms) PC, the G4 has a firewire port, is there a possible route here (just point me and I will run) or
is it possible to network PC / Mac?
Have reviewed various forums etc to find out what is possible but do not find a clear or clean path. In the main I think my knowledge mac lack of) stops me from being able to sort chaff from wheat.

I may have to consider some external device (purchased) backup - suggestions?
Sorry to to appear so unknowledgeable but I am finding it a struggle.

Thanks   Bernie Spoor
Steve,
Have got a HDD firewire / usb enclosure will use that to backup data etc - am using mac help as much as possible. Hope to be able to close soon.
Bernie
