Cannot print after the first page. "The system cannot open the device or file specified"
I have a user that can print one document and then cannot print on subsequent tries. She then has to restart before she can print again. When subsequent print attempts are made, the following is displayed when the user opens the printer queue: document1.doc Error - Printing - The system cannot open the device or file specified
Other users can print to this printer just fine. Here is the configuration:
Client machines: Windows 2000 Pro SP4
Print Server: Windows XP Pro SP2
I have ensured that the SYSTEM account has access to the root of the OS drive, I have ensured that the paths are all default and the TEMP folder is intact, not compressed and with proper permissions. There is plenty of disk space on both the client machine and the print server.
I am not sure if this is related, but in the event viewer on the client machine, I find the following event in the Application Log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: 5/18/2005
Time: 11:17:13 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: <COMPUTERNAME>
Description:
Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. Return value (1722).
I have removed the computer from the domain and re-added it to the domain, but the event is still recorded. This may or may not be related though.
