Growing a Filemaker database into a datawarehouse with datamarts? Good reads?

I have been working in education technology for many years now.  The industry is now getting around the notion of becoming "data driven" and that means that they are beginning to develop relational-web based databases.  I spoke with a group who manages charter schools and they are eager to develop their data system into a web based platform. The currently operate in FileMaker Pro.

So the question is this:  If they are going to staff up to develop thier data systems (so they can replicate successful schools) and model data driven proctices, where should they go to learn about "art" of database development starting with Filemaker pro?  Is there a list of required reading and professional references?  This group has Gates money and is serious about the work, but where to begin?

thanks
