Creating a .tar.gz file of a whole directory tree

I have shell access to my webserver, and I want to make a single archive file of the whole /www/www.domain.com/images/ tree which includes many files and several subfolders.

I tried gzip -r images images from /www/www.domain.com/ but that served only to create a .jpg.gz file to replace each .jpg that was there.

What is the command I need to create a single archive, not replacing the current files, so that I can download all of my images in one file to extract locally?
