Duplicate Display Adapter after Automatic Windows Update

A few weeks a Dell SX280, with onboard video,  received an automatic windows update.  I found the machine with an "out of range" message on the display and a ugly blue vertically lined unreadable screen.  Tried reboot. Nothing. Reboot Safe Mode.  Find I now have two entries for the same exact onboard display adapter using the same exact driver.  First tried disabling one and reboot. Nothing.  Tried disabling the other.  Nothing.  Uninstalled both and the machine boots then XP proceeds to find the hardware and install the driver.....TWICE......which let's everything run fine until the next time you boot.  Then we start all over again with "out of range" unless I uninstall both instances of the adapter before the boot. I checked windows update installation history and found that it had installed "Dell Inc - Video - Intel 82915G\GV\910GL Express Chipset Family".  The really wacko thing is this is the same exact driver as was supplied with the original config as I tried installing that again off the Dell disk with the same results.  I know, this is why we don't let windows update automatically.  But this user is not savy at all and would never do any updates manually. My hand is forced. I also tried to do a windows system restore to a date prior to this incident with no luck.  Any ideas?  Many thanks......
