Local variables in threads and routines called by them

I have an app that talks to several COM ports at once.  The COM ports are serviced via multiple instances of the Async32 TVaComm component.  Each COM port is communicated with in a thread.  My question relates to local variables - both within the Thread.Execute routine, and in the routines called from it.  I'm getting loads of access violations

procedure LibraryRoutineInAnotherUnit ;

var
    localvar : integer ;   // does this need to be a threadvar?
begin
LocalVar := ...
end ;

...

procedure MyThread.Execute ;

var
    localvarinthread : real ;  // should this be a threadvar, or better still, a field of the thread object?

begin
LibraryRoutineInAnotherUnit  ;
localvarinthread  := ..

end ;
